EDELWEISS HIGH TRAIL

Walk high above Zermatt through wild alpine landscapes, hidden valleys and some of the most spectacular Matterhorn viewpoints in the Swiss Alps.

Overview

Named after the iconic alpine flower, the Edelweiss High Trail is one of Zermatt’s most spectacular full-day hikes.

Following a crystal-clear mountain stream, the trail climbs high above the valley to the breathtaking Höhbalmen Plateau, one of the most impressive viewpoints in the region. Surrounded by vast alpine meadows, glaciers and many of Switzerland’s highest peaks, the landscape feels wild, remote and untouched.

With the Matterhorn dominating the horizon, the route continues through the peaceful Zmutt Valley before returning to Zermatt, offering a complete alpine experience far from the crowds.

While technically straightforward, the route requires stamina, sure-footedness and comfort on mountain trails.

Itinerary

Meet your guide in central Zermatt before beginning the ascent towards Trift and the Höhbalmen Plateau.

The trail gradually climbs through forests, mountain streams and alpine terrain before reaching the spectacular plateau at approximately 2,650 metres. Here, uninterrupted views open across the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa massif and many surrounding 4,000-metre peaks.

After time to enjoy the scenery and a well-earned break, the route continues along a beautiful high-altitude traverse before descending into the traditional Zmutt Valley, where historic wooden barns and quiet mountain pastures provide a glimpse into old alpine life.
