MEET THE BLACKNOSE SHEEP

Encounter the world-famous Valais Blacknose sheep in their natural mountain environment and discover one of Zermatt’s most charming mountain experiences.

Overview

A guided hike designed to meet the legendary Valais Blacknose sheep, often called the most photogenic sheep in the world. Depending on their grazing location, the experience adapts naturally — leading you through Zermatt’s alpine landscapes, quiet trails, and panoramic viewpoints. Along the way, you can discover a unique blend of local heritage, mountain life, and untouched nature, far beyond the usual tourist routes.

Fitness Level

Moderate

A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. The route follows established hiking trails and may include some uneven alpine terrain and moderate uphill sections. We always walk at a comfortable pace, with plenty of opportunities to rest, take photos, and enjoy the surroundings. No previous hiking experience is required, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours on mountain trails.

Itinerary

1. Flexible Route Selection

Depending on the sheep’s grazing location on the day, we either hike directly from Zermatt or use mountain transport to reach higher alpine terrain.

2. Sheep Encounter & Exploration

We approach the grazing areas calmly and respectfully, allowing time to observe, photograph, and experience these unique animals in their natural environment. During the walk, we share insights into the Valais Blacknose breed, local farming traditions, and life in the mountains.

3. Scenic Return

After the encounter, we continue with a relaxed hike through alpine scenery before returning comfortably to Zermatt by foot or by the lift system.
