Scattered across the high alpine meadows of Wallis stand the Eringer — the valley's native black cattle, stocky and sure-footed, built for centuries of life on steep mountain pasture. Their coats are a deep, almost polished black, their horns short and curved, their presence unmistakable against the green of the alps and the grey of the peaks behind them.
But the Eringer are more than mountain grazers — they're fighters by instinct. Each spring, long before the traditional Kuhkämpfe (cow fights) begin in the valley, the cows themselves settle their own hierarchy on the high pastures, pushing head to head, horn to horn, establishing who leads the herd. It's a ritual as old as transhumance itself — the seasonal movement of livestock up into the alps — and one that has shaped the breed's stubborn, powerful character for generations.
